The embedded world Conference is the world's leading meeting place for the embedded community. In an interview with Frank Riemenschneider, editor-in-chief of the organiser DESIGN&ELEKTRONIK, Prof. Axel Sikora, Chairman of the Steering Board, explains what embedded intelligence is all about.

Every year, experienced developers come together in Nuremberg to share their knowledge and help others turn ideas and innovations into real products. In its 17th year, the conference takes up the title of one of its predecessors from the 1990s. In the past, embedded intelligence was more of a vision of the future, but today it is becoming more and more a reality and is shaping more and more systems: from autonomous vehicles, image recognition and embedded vision systems to preventive and demand-oriented maintenance in Industry 4.0 systems, from small computers to high-performance cloud servers. These developments not only open up immense opportunities and business opportunities, but are also closely linked to many technical, economic, social and ethical issues.

Medical and industrial IoT is an evolving and alluring option for users —one that holds great promise for plans to pull medtech into Industry 4.0. Proponents of the technology say automation and data exchange will transform manufacturing floors into smart factories and help hospitals make the transition to efficiency and economy – without sacrificing care.

With regard to IoT devices, however, there are some challenges in how these devices fit into the overall infrastructure. JC Ramirez, director of engineering and product management at ADL Embedded Solutions, said it’s a mistake to think of industrial and medical in the same terms of IoT that you might think about commercial IoT. For Ramirez, industrial IoT is more about controlling the infrastructure and monitoring remote equipment.

Latency is a big issue, Ramirez said, one that doesn’t translate from commercial use. For example, updates and patches for those applications needs to happen quickly and predictably. “I don’t care if my refrigerator takes 10 hours or 10 minutes to update, but when it comes to manufacturing equipment, the systems must be reliable 24/7.”

we are please to announce, that all of the latest ADL CPU-Boards are TSN-Ready:

The EtherCAT Group (ETG) have supplemented EtherCAT with Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) technologies, expanding the field of possible EtherCAT applications to include heterogeneous network environments. With the help of TSN, industrial controls can contact a number of different EtherCAT segments in real-time through Ethernet networks. In doing so, no changes to the EtherCAT slave devices are required: the EtherCAT Device Protocol, including all high performance characteristics, is fully preserved. Also expanded by TSN is the EtherCAT Automation Protocol (EAP) for communication between controls, which will result in even more deterministic performance on this level.
