Beckhoff I/O clamp celebrates its 25th birthday

The Bus Terminal was presented for the first time at the 1995 Hanover Fair. It was developed jointly by Beckhoff and Wago and has since conquered the automation market. Beckhoff will present the current portfolio of terminals and other news at the SPS Connect fair.

25 years ago, Beckhoff Automation had an idea: With the Bus Terminal, the company combined the terminal block principle with fieldbus technology for the first time. Together with Wago Kontakttechnik, a modular and open I/O system was created. It was first presented at the Hanover Fair in 1995.

The partner companies focused on further development of the block module concept for the electronic terminal block. The bus terminal concept went one step further: the aim was to replace the traditional terminal block with an electronic version. The result was the complete hardware, software and K-Bus communication. Beckhoff also created a complete product family consisting of Bus Couplers and signal and system terminals. This provided a fieldbus-independent, modular I/O system.

What has happened since then? After the Bus Terminal was introduced, the technology quickly established itself. Today, Bus Terminals and EtherCAT Terminals are used in a wide range of applications: from classical machine automation to Ethernet-based building automation and process technology. Currently available from Beckhoff is the IP 20 and IP 67 I/O portfolio, which goes back to the original idea of the Bus Terminal.

Embedded PCs with AMD processor

In addition to the anniversary of the Bus Terminal, Beckhoff is focusing on further developments. In the Embedded PCs division, the automation company is relying on AMD's Ryzen processors. The "CX20x3" series can be used with both TwinCAT 2 and TwinCAT 3 software, i.e. for 32- and 64-bit systems. Users can use Windows 10 IoT Enterprise or the new TwinCAT/BSD as operating system. Two variants are currently available:

  • CX2033: fanless PC without rotating components
with AMD Ryzen V1202B CPU (2.3 GHz clock frequency, two cores)
  • CX2043: PC with ball-bearing and speed-controlled fan
and Ryzen V1807B CPU (3.35 GHz clock frequency, four cores)

The AMD processors are based on the Zen architecture and offer high computing power. In addition, there is an integrated graphic that is separated from the CPU cache. The basic equipment includes dual GbEthernet, quad USB 3.1 Gen. 2 and simple DVI-D including a main memory with 8 GByte. In addition, the CPU has 128 kByte NOVRAM internally if no UPS is used. A fieldbus or serial interface is optionally available. All other components of the CX2000 family can be adapted via the high-pin connections on both sides.

Fanless IPC C6027

The Industrial PC "C6027" is fanless and has an Intel Core i chipset. Compared to the IPC "C6025" it has a second board level with optional interfaces or integrated 1-second UPS. Further variants are in preparation.

  • up to four processor cores
  • 4 GByte DDR4 RAM (expandable to 8 GByte)
  • 40 GByte M.2-SSD, 3D-Flash
  • 1 x DisplayPort
  • 4 x USB 3.0
  • on-board Ethernet adapter with 3 x 100/1000Base-T
  • Operating temperature range: 0 to 50 °C

Six-way Ethernet (RJ45) is currently available, making it suitable for use as an IoT or security gateway. With dimensions of 82 x 127 x 69 mm, it is compact and designed for many mounting options. With the energy-efficient Intel Core i-U processor in combination with a comprehensive cooling concept, the power dissipation can be dissipated purely passively via a one-sided cooling surface.

Embedded World 2021 goes digital

The embedded world Exhibition&Conference will take place next year as a completely digital event. Both the trade fair and accompanying conferences, the embedded world Conference and the electronic displays Conference, will be held as virtual formats under the name embedded world DIGITAL. Participants will have five days at their disposal from March 1-5, 2021. With this decision, NürnbergMesse is reacting to the ongoing conditions caused by the coronavirus pandemic and its effects on the embedded community – while ensuring participants have planning security in good time.

Finally: Intel announces new ATOM product family "Elkhart Lake"!

The exciting thing about the new Atom processors of the x6000E series is that they have some technical features that are explicitly aimed at applications in automation or in vehicles - but not only.

These new chips target a wide range of markets including ULP servers, networking, memory, edge and IoT.
The new processor generation is marketed as Atom x6000E for embedded systems and as Pentium J6000 and Celeron N6000 for devices for the Internet of Things. Compared to the previous Bay Trail or Apollo Lake of 2016, the new chips offer dramatically higher computing and graphics performance.

Intel also integrates up to 32 EUs into the heavily revised graphics unit (Gen11), which greatly increases speed. The quad-core chips perform in the 10 watt performance class and are equipped with a 128-bit interface for LPDDR4X-3200 or LPDDR4-2400 memory.

Elkhart Lake is not a system-on-a-chip (like Whiskey Lake Core i-U), so an additional I/O hub chip is needed, which is soldered to the same carrier. The processors support up to three monitors via display port 1.3 and HDMI 2.0b, plus eMMC 5.1 and UFS 2.0 for flash memory. Elkhart Lake also offers PCIe Gen3.0 with 8 lanes and USB 3.2 Gen1 for external expansion.

A new feature is an integrated ARM computing core of type Cortex-M7, which operates as a Programmable Services Engine (PSE) with firmware based on the Zephyr real-time operating system. This economical core can take over tasks even when the two or four x86-64 cores are asleep. The PSE controls real-time functions typical for industrial applications: Acquisition of sensor signals, reaction to network signals, out-of-band management - with the main processor switched off.

The main memory is LPDDR4X-3200-SDRAM with two or four x32 channels. The Atom types can protect the RAM against the most common bit errors by generating Error Correction Code (ECC) when saving and checking it when reading. No additional memory chips are required for this, instead part of the existing RAM is used for ECC (in-band ECC).

Also interesting is what the x6000E Atom processors don't have: the Turbo mode, which brings out the last bit of acceleration from PC applications. This feature is superfluous for automation applications and only leads to unnecessary heat generation. These architecture decisions show that Intel takes the industrial market as a key market environment very seriously and is no longer serving it with relabelled PC products.

[PRODUCT ANNOUNCEMENT]

You can be sure: You will again expect industry-leading products in the form of SBCs and IPCs / EPCs from Beckhoff Automation on the latest Intel platforms & technologies!

[UPDATE]

The RE and FE versions of the Atom x6000E are designed for real-time control tasks and have Time Coordinated Computing (TCC) and Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) capabilities.

In turn, the FE types have a "safety island" to meet functional safety specifications such as IEC 61508 and ISO 13849 (SIL2/Cat.3 PL d, SIL3/Cat.4 PL e).

In addition to TSN, the I/O interfaces also include a CAN/CAN-FD interface for industrial applications. There are three Ethernet ports for TSN, which are based on a physical layer with a transmission rate of 2.5 Gbit/s. The three ports can be used, for example, to build a daisy-chain chain and an additional dedicated port. Another special feature is a quadrature encoder input that evaluates signals such as those coming from encoders in motor controllers.
